Great local foods & wines in Boise

Posted at 9:08 AM on July 2, 2008 by Scott Swendsen

Wow - almost two weeks already since Lynne's first visit to Boise! I know that I had fun eating local foods, tasting Idaho wines and giving Lynne a quick tour of the Boise Capital City Public Market.

As I mentioned in my last blog, Lynne was here to help raise money for Boise State Public Radio and while in town signing books, she had several opportunities for tasting some of the local foods and wines that Idaho is becoming renown for.

Friday evening, a small intimate gathering was held at a wonderful private home in the foothills overlooking Boise. The event, sponsored by the Idaho Grape Growers & Wine Producers Commission, had a wonderful mix of Idaho foods and wines. Foods included a variety of grilled lamb sausages, smoked trout, cheeses, asparagus, tomatoes, morels, seared beef tenderloin, cold cherry soup and wonderful truffles. Wines ranged from merlot to cabernet, syrah to rose, chardonnay, viognier and some very tasty ice wine and malbec. Let's just say I was pretty close to being in paradise! And what made the evening all the more special was that the food was prepared by young adults who are participating in the Life's Kitchen educational cooking program.

Early the next morning, I had a chance to meet up again with Lynne to give her a personal tour of the Farmers' Market before she went to a morning brunch and off to another special dinner held for her in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Here is a picture of Lynne with my favorite farmers' market booth - Peaceful Belly! This 4 acre organic farm located just a few miles from downtown Boise provides me with a weekly CSA share plus what goodies I can find at their booth at the market.

And this is what happens when you go off to a great brunch and get to the market about two hours after it opens. Not much left at Peaceful Belly!

Even worse at another one of my farmers' market food suppliers:

No wonder I get there before the market opens to figure out what I want and what I can persuade the farmers to save for me as I make the rounds. Here is a great picture of how it looks before the cowbell rings:

So words of wisdom - show up to your local markets early!!

For more about Lynne's visit to Idaho, visit Boise State Public Radio and listen to a three part interview that is posted there:

Fast questions about food - not, mind you, questions about fast food

Enjoy!
