Leslie Allen
Reno, Nevada
I was born in California, and have fond memories of homegrown tomatoes and freshly caught crawdads. My family moved a lot when I was growing up. I even lived on the East coast for a while. More about Leslie
Laura Solorio
Salinas, California
I am third in a line of strong Yaqui women. My grandmother was from Baja California, from the town of Santa Rosalia. She came to the United States as a young woman, with her first child, escaping an abusive husband. More about Laura
Scott Swendsen
Boise, Idaho
I am in my late 40's and single and a bit selfish. Having no children and no spouse has allowed me to pretty much explore life in a much different way than most families would. More about Scott

I have been getting organic delivery service http://www.newrootsorganics.com/ every other week for several years. We used to not have year -round farmers markets.
I use the bin to supplement what I would get on Sat. or Sun. from the co-op (or vice versa) . As a confirmed nondriver, if I didn't walk to the store before a certain time of the evening in the fall and winter, I would not have dinner were there no leftovers in the fridge. When I was really tired, receiving delivery truly made a difference in this teacher's stomach and life after the days got shorter.
In the summer I usually wean myself off from the delivery service because I am more likely to go to farmers' markets. The days are longer and brighter! I tend to travel more during the summer months and don't need to be dependent on the service.
In September, October, and November, lots of good things are available from New Roots Organic. One thing about the fall is that I get to go through lots of WA State apples and pears, including various heirloom varieties.
In the delivery there are always greens; the owner Carolyn is really into anti-oxidants. I get to try different varieties of produce, items I'd never buy from a store or market because I am not familiar with them. Exciting!
There are always recipes in the bin, too, primarily vegetarian.
There are often nonlocal foods in the bin at certain times of the year. On the locavore plan, I usually give the nonlocal items away (unless I absolutely had to have that orange or grapefruit). For example, whenever there are avocadoes, my dad takes them. My mother will also grab some of the other non-local produce. The two cantaloupes have had her name on them.
We keep talking about strawberries on this site. I keep receiving non-Washington State strawberries in my organic produce bin. What's up with that? This year on the locavore plan, as I have already mentioned, I give them to my stepfather. Yesterday in the bin I received ANOTHER pint of California strawberries! They smell ripe and wonderful. I will take the berries to my parents' house and let them devour the lot.
