I was born in California, and have fond memories of homegrown tomatoes and freshly caught crawdads. My family moved a lot when I was growing up. I even lived on the East coast for a while. More about Leslie

Jetlagged introductions to Tampa and later to Seattle ice cream

Posted at 6:48 PM on May 30, 2008 by Paulette Thompson (4 Comments)

I went to Tampa to celebrate my niece Gabby's 18th birthday and graduation from high school. I had a good time. It was hot and humid. I had hoped to try all sorts of local favorites (well, I really wanted Caribbean food of the Cuban or Jamaican variety). That didn't happen. There were too many things going on. When you are a guest and there are various events planned, you go with the flow.

My sister Elaine does not keep sugar in her house. I wanted sugar or honey for coffee, but there was only Splenda. I guess I should have known better. My body rejected that splenda right away!

I noticed on Sunday afternoon that there were local public markets and people were shopping for produce. On Sunday we went to Publix, a grocery store, to pick up my niece's delicious birthday cake. I wish I known on the first day when I was taken to the Target supermaket that Publix carries guava, mango, papaya, coconut and other tropical flavors. I think the brand was "Latin Flavor".

I have papers to write, but I just decided to treat myself to ice cream from the new spot in Wallingford, Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream

Oh, my word. It is good. I eventually chose cardamom ice cream after testing lemon, thai ice tea, salted caramel, and honey lavender flavors. Yes, baby, it's local, all the way local.
I think I'll go back soon,

Definitely a Cubano sounds good! Plus the opportunity for some deep fried grouper! Of course, I hear that the grouper harvest is unsustainable, so I guess that would have to be crossed off my list if I visit the Gulf Coast...

I bet it was nice to get away from Seattle to somewhere warm? The tropical flavors and fruits I bet were delicious!

I am still looking for local ice cream - I know that the dairy that I buy the milk from makes it but they just sell it in their creamery which is 100 miles away so not very sustainable to drive down there for a bowl of happiness...

Scott,
The ice cream at Molly Moon's was so good. I am surprised that Boise is without good local ice cream outside of people's homes.

I have been toying with buying an ice cream maker for a few years; I figured that because I lived alone such an expense was not wise. Maybe I'll finally do it. I can always share with people.

When you get to Minnesota, the blackberries should still be out. That would make a nice ice cream.

Will you make jam? I have started looking at recipes...

Molly Moon's is excellent! I highly encourage all ice cream lovers in the Seattle area to give it a try...or two tries.

We are leaving this neighborhood to return to our newly renovated school. I will miss Molly Moon's ice cream! The students who have been there already speak Molly Moon's praises.
I know I'll have to visit this area more often. I stopped myself from going today. Yesterday I wanted to go, but they don't open until noon. I stood outside the door at 11 am and they wouldn't take pity on me.

I'll be back! What flavors should I try?
