I was born in California, and have fond memories of homegrown tomatoes and freshly caught crawdads. My family moved a lot when I was growing up. I even lived on the East coast for a while. More about Leslie

I am in my late 40's and single and a bit selfish. Having no children and no spouse has allowed me to pretty much explore life in a much different way than most families would. More about Scott

Great Basin Food Basket

Posted at 1:44 PM on May 21, 2008 by Leslie Allen (3 Comments)

Our CSA has finally started! I am so happy! Fresh greens, asparagus, and kiwis (from Auburn, 120 miles away) are a part of our Locavore diet now! We have been making monthly payments on our veggie basket since January, and have been eagerly counting down the days to the first delivery.

We have decided to share our basket with my best friend, Jill. We thought that our garden would be in full swing about the same time the CSA started. While I do have Swiss chard, flat-leaf parsley, chives, and some lettuce, I'm not growing the prize of spring - asparagus! I have been waiting patiently for spring's first spears, and must admit I was SO jealous reading of Tim's account of scoring the first asparagus of the North Carolina spring farmers market. Indeed, I even was ready to drive to Kalamazoo when I read Donna's blog about their farmers market opening day! It seemed so unfair. I knew that Nevada's farmers were growing asparagus, and I wanted it NOW.

My wait was finally over last week when a pound of asparagus arrived in our veggie basket. I had been accumulating a nice collection of recipes anticipating its arrival. But, as soon as I got the first spears I ignored all my fancy recipes and stuck with my favorite - grilled asparagus. I doused them with olive oil, crushed garlic, salt and pepper and grilled them to perfection. Not only did I ignore my fancy recipes, but I ignored my husband and Jill. I never told them about that first fresh pound of asparagus I ate all by myself! Do you think they'll forgive me?

There is no greater joy than sharing really fresh wonderfully prepared food with friends and family, but even I might have finished off that first bunch of asparagus all by myself too!

I love grilled asparagus also, but I grill it with a splash of balsamic vinegar. yummy.

I agree! I was so excited to see local asparagus at the Boise Farmer's Market that I bought 4 pounds - and ate about a pound a day!! So wonderful and fresh. I had so hoped to be able to freeze and can some of it this year but doesn't look like I will be able to do that now so will be satisfied with just eating as much as I can...

Hey Leslie,
Wow, that sounds so delicious! My mom served it to me grilled with chicken and onions.

P.S. What do you like to do with rhubarb?
