We Came in Second!!

Posted at 9:56 PM on October 14, 2008 by April Luginbuhl

Cleveland was ranked second in local food and agriculture by SustainLane. SustainLane is a consumer driven organization owned by SustainLane Media. According to their website they are leading the way in sustainability surveys across the country. The local food category is determined by number of farmers markets and community gardens. They claim that Cleveland has had a 600 percent increase in total number of farmers' markets since 2006.

While I can't personally verify that, I will say that the organizations that run our farmers' markets are growing and local food discussions are everywhere One of my favorite new features is a new on-line networking site for local foodies, called Local Food Cleveland while haven't had a lot of time to explore the board yet, it seems like a great way to put people in touch with each other about local food. One neat feature I noticed was a set of messages putting people with fruit trees in touch with people who wanted to pick that fruit.

One other forum is provided by the CSA organizers. There is a food chat at a local restaurant every other Monday. This Monday they will be screening and discussing a portion of the movie, Uproooted: Reconnecting People and Food. It is a movie about the growth and distribution of local food in Northeast Ohio. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it, but I can't wait to see the final product.

Finally, I've been looking around for a herd share for when I can have dairy again. I found not one, but two in my area. I was impressed given that I couldn't find any in Columbus. I probably won't join one until after the holidays, assuming I can work dairy into my diet by then, but I'm glad to know the option exists. The farmers' market might be over for this year, but there are still plenty of local food activities to be had.
