out of the bag - into the oven

Posted at 10:00 AM on October 15, 2008 by Timothy Baird (9 Comments)

If you happened to miss my interview on the radio about a week and a half ago - the cat is out of the bag that there's a bun in the oven. Kiyah is pregnant - about 16 weeks at this point and we are very excited.

While this development holds many important questions for us, only a few are relevant for this blog. It's true that our love affair with local food has lost some of the heat over the past few months. We use to go for long walks through the park (us and the local food, that is) and now, comfortable in our relationship, we just give each other a quick kiss as we're heading out the door (again, us and the local food). So Kiyah needs to eat all the time now and hunger can come like a thief in the night... in fact, frequently it does. We're thinking of moving the fridge into the bedroom.

Early on she had some trouble getting her hands on quick local snacks. Fortunately the apple harvest here in NC filling the void just as we're noticing that the summer fruits are gone for good. We have begun our hoarding behavior buying upwards of 10 lbs of apples a week. She's also acquired an unrelenting appetite for cinnamon toast (locally milled and baked) and chocolate milk.

While eating locally has its tedious moments, we've noticed that we haven't noticed any increased concern that her diet contains GMO foods, growth hormones, or pesticides. Generally we don't eat that stuff now... so junior doesn't either.

Tim - I heard your interview w/Lynne - it was great! Have been waiting for this post so I could be the first - well, at least among the 14 of us - to say congratulations to you and Kiyah on your little locavore.

Tim and Kiyah,

Hang in there. The hardest part is the snacks in the middle of the night. We made our own granola bars and tortillas - seemed to be life savers for my midnight quesadilla demands. Congrats!!!

Congratulations!! I know how hard those late night cravings are- especially to eat locally. Oatmeal worked for me late at night, but everyone is different. Enjoy your new adventure. May you enjoy every minute of it!

Thanks, Donna, Sareen, Autumn, and April. It's nice to now were part of a kid-friendly and supportive blogging community.

Cheers.

Tim and Kiya,

Happy for you!

Great that Kiya's cravings are also local food! Many times the cravings are unusual and out of character for one's normal apetite. This is what I have been told from those carrying children.

Wish you well, the three of you, look fwd to reading more..

Thanks, Melissa.

The other day, Kiyah said that the chocolate milk tasted funny... so maybe we're moving on to something else. We'll see.

Best,
