Strawberries

Posted at 10:23 AM on December 16, 2008 by Sareen Dunleavy Keenan (4 Comments)

You knew that fruit had special powers right? I have a baby (the older one) that LOVES fruit. So needless to say, the transition from summer to fall was tough. For the first few weeks apples were fun to eat and to say. It kind of sounds like "AP-flll" or at least that is how I would spell it.

The apple season opened up new worlds for our household. Baby could request snacks when she wanted them. She also learned how to just reach up onto the counter to get her own apple. Neat. But one day, she fell out of love with the apple. Who knows why. Could be the teeth coming in, could be the every day of the same thing, could be the fact that I cored them for her and she didn't get to much on the seeds anymore.

Suddenly, she was requesting something else. Something that sounded a lot like "swwaseri" She knows and loves to say sausage, and this wasn't it. She knows how to say sorry too. Close, but she wasn't saying that either. Hmmm.... then I realized what she was saying. I went to the freezer and cracked out some strawberries and said: "Strawberry?"

YES! YES! Yes! Frantic signing of both more and please came along with the yes. This baby knows what she wants. The strange thing to me was the last time she had a strawberry was probably two months ago. I cannot think of a book with a strawberry in it either. Apparently the experience was so exciting that she held on to that word and as soon as her mouth could almost say it, she did.

Mom was happy for an excuse to break out the swwaseri's too. Yum!

That's my kind of kid! I've really enjoyed your posts Sareen. You have a great attitude towards local food.

April

It is nice to hear that April. I feel like the slacker of the bunch. I have all of these things that I always mean to post. If only I could dictate my thoughts while commuting or something. This is currently my only "alone time" and the only time I think about things like eating.

Keep up the good work on your end too!

I would never have guessed it. We're still building our lives around local foods. Eating local seemed to come so easily to you, that ease inspires me.

Oh, and I hope my boy is as old as your daughter before he eats a goldfish!

It is likely that what appears to be an ease about things really comes back to my cluelessness about life. Who knew that goldfish weren't really that bad? I read the box after that encounter and thought, if it had to be anything, I am OK with this.

I hope the son is doing well (sam?) I think he is like 7 months now? I think i remember this because I was very jealous when you had your baby. I didn't want to wait any longer!
