I miss broccolli

Posted at 7:59 PM on November 11, 2008 by Vera Schabicki (5 Comments)

Dear fellow Locavores, I miss broccolli, I miss going to the store and just buying food and going home and cooking it! One of our comfort foods is two big bunches of organic broccolli sauteed with lots of onions and garlic in lots of olive oil and placed on top of a big steaming mound of organic whole grain pasta and then laced with huge fluffy piles or grating cheese (Romano or Parmaginao). There is no local broccoli, at least I think not, I cannot honestly say, as I have not been to a farmers market in a long while (I could actually go on Saturday, but with all of the other driving around I do all week, I am just either broke or pooped on Saturday.....)

I had to go to California for a couple of unexpected days, while I was there my mother gave me 20 pounds of her wonderful freshly picked olives, I stuffed them in my suitcase......and did not get into trouble, and then I came home and got out my Patricia Wells At Home in Provence book and followed the recipe for salt cured olives....wow....I felt so provincial, two huge bowls of olives loaded with salt and garden herbs, sitting on my counter...people stopped by many times a day to stir the concoction (this only helped the process)...and now we have a lot of jars of beautiful olives in our pantry, they are very tasty (I better stop now or Scott will go on about run on sentences).

My family is smaller now, the ongoing crises of the summer have resulted in one less child (I am have been the gaurdian of my three neices for the last almost thirteen years), as my middle of the middle child has gone to live with her father. It is funny how one can identify with a title, "mother of five", now "mother of four"... oh well, my friends like to tease me about my 80% success rate.

I am looking forward to reading my fellow bloggers posts (for the last few months) and re-newing my efforts at Locavore living.

Best wishes to all, Vera

I began a "victory garden" last Spring and am growing my own broccoli with the Fall plantings. You might consider that. I am also investing in a small greenhouse for the colder months.
Lucky you to have fresh olives!

That sounds so yummy (the broccoli dish)! Good luck with finding broccoli. For some reason ours is still growing, though it is well below freezing.

I actually tried growing Broccoli......I just don't get it...people obviously are able to do this, yet I was a dismal failure both from seed and nursery transplants.....I have a lot of leaf and a very few scrawny buggy little florets....to say I am discouraged would be a rather significant understatement....I wonder what I am doing wrong.

Gina, I have heard that freezing accentuates the taste of Broccoli and some other veggies....have you noticed this?

I wonder what part of the broccoli plant is edible, for example can one eat the leaves from brocolli and cauliflower (another failure).

Thanks for your comments (Michele your olives are on the way!).
