Halloween Indulgence

Posted at 9:19 PM on November 3, 2008 by Gina Keenan (3 Comments)

We were pretty pathetic and didn't even try to come up with local candy or candy alternatives. We have decided that there are some things which are not worth bucking the system over, and Halloween is one of those things for us. We usually get well over 100 kids coming to the door from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the official "Trick and Treat" hours in Eau Claire. It is quite the event watching the droves of kids up and down the street. With this many potential trick and treaters, the alternatives seemed pricey, and ultimately, too much of a commitment in energy and thought on our part (actually my part, because I would be the only one coming up with an alternative).

One family of trick and treaters actually gave us something back, a "thank you" on a paper flyer that had a mini-candy bar of fair trade dark chocolate. I was impressed with that. You would think we could have minimally came up with that, but alas, we didn't.

Anyways, the aftermath of the Halloween candy was an interesting study. We have all heard how bad sugar is for kids, but I have always thought, "yeah, yeah, maybe for someone else's kids". But once again my kids prove me wrong. The kids went from nearly no sugar on Thursday, to having a constant drip line of sugar for two days. The behavioral changes were amazing, they bounced between constant whining, being hyper and crashing. Miserable for Mom and Dad.

The adults in our house also participated in throwing back the candy into our mouths (you know taking one for the kids). I wouldn't say our reactions were as drastic, but I did notice indigestion. Another observation was the candy did not taste as good as I remember it tasting, but that still didn't stop me from eating it. And the final topper was that, now that the candy is all gone, a mere 3 days after Halloween, I have found myself craving candy, something that I haven't done in probably nine months or so. And now we have to go cold turkey...

That is hilarious - ahh... traditions!

I deliberately chose candy that was peanut-free, and not chocolate bars, so that I would stay out of the leftovers. Turns out I like the Tootsie roll assortment just fine! And we had hardly any trick-or-treaters this year. There is not even anyone left living at home who plays poker for Halloween candy, lol, so I think that whatever is left by Sunday is going to the coffee hour at church.

Good move Helen, get the candy out of the house ASAP. It sucks you in.
