Trick - or - treat

Posted at 3:16 PM on October 8, 2008 by Sareen Dunleavy Keenan (3 Comments)

Minnesota locavores, what are you giving to those sweet children that are coming to your door in a few short weeks?

I have thought of making things, but who would let them eat homemade things from a stranger these days? I know I wouldn't, so that quickly went by the wayside.

I know the good folks over there at the Pearson's Candy Company make "fun sized" Salted Nut Rolls. Are their other options? What are you doing? Help! These things creep up on me and I don't want to wait until the last minute to find something suitable.

Year after year, in disbelief, I watch our little trick-or-treaters opt for the apple and little packs of caramel dip over the candy bars, given a choice. (I give them a choice because, darn it, it's halloween.) I can't explain it, but I like it. We can always find great local apples at the end of October.

One year the wood lake nature center gave out honey sticks like I've seen at the farmers market. I have no idea what they cost in bulk but my kid loves them.

Those are both fantastic ideas. I know (argh!) knew (before FITM closed) where to get honey sticks. What a great idea! Caramel dip and apples would be easy too. Thanks, I might do all three! Sareen
