Last May, I shared this local food story from our Yahoo Group. Julie, the author of that story, posted another little gem today from her home at the southern end of Lake Michigan.
This past Sunday I was working in my front yard & my 91-yr-old neighbor lady came over & asked if I had an extra ring for a canning jar. She said she had 3 old pear trees & after her son had topped them off, they produced a lot of fruit this year. I gave her a ring & about an hour or so later I found a jar of canned pears on my porch still quite hot. It looks so beautiful sitting on my counter & I wish I could keep it forever in memory of our friendship. I also had the thought "Now, that's local!"
I have never met Julie (or her neighbor), but I can see every detail of this sweet story in my mind's eye. As with her local food experience in May, Julie manages to convey - in just a few words - so much of what the local food movement is about: relationships, community and real food.
What a lovely story. ME
