Early January may seem an inauspicious time to begin an "eat local" project in Southwest Michigan. As if to underscore that point, nearly a foot of snow fell in Kalamazoo on January 3. More about Donna

Disappointing

Posted at 10:19 PM on August 17, 2008 by Gina Keenan (4 Comments)

This is a wonderful time for eating local; it is hard to not eat almost 100% local right now. And the bonus is, it is fun to do. But amongst all this bliss, I am deeply disappointed-in my garden.

We have a CSA (community supported agriculture) subscription that we split with a neighbor, we have the farmer's market, which is amazing, and we have family and friends whose gardens are bountiful; therefore are able to share their bounty. So we are raking in the produce. But I can't get over how disgusted I am in the output of my garden. My tomatoes are pretty and producing well, but I have had four zucchini only, and the cucumbers are weak at best. Who gets four zucchini's only? And the cucumbers-what's up with that? I could go on and on with the lackluster performance of this garden. Ever time I look at it, I think of how if we depended on this garden, we would be starving this winter.

In two weeks we have a neighborhood garden club potluck, which requires making a dish that is composed of produce from your garden. I just hope we still have some, or else I will be "cheating" with our CSA produce or the farmer's market.

I sympathize—some things in our garden (acorn squash, tomatoes) have gone nuts on production, while other things (corn, beans, peppers, lettuce) just didn't quite get there. I think in our case it's my fault for not watering more; June and July were just too dry to leave the garden to its own devices. I guess tomatoes just don't mind not getting as much water?

Kevin,

Thanks for the sympathy. Watering is likely an issue with me too. I have read even, consitant watering helps in the growth of most plants-I am definitely not watering like that. I think our cool nights are encouraging mildew on alot of my plants too. The moles don't help either-they don't eat the roots, but they mess the roots up enough. Oh well, there is always next year....

I looked around the other day only to find no zuchini. I feel so dumb buying zuchini of all things at the farmers market. I agree, who can't grow zuchini? Pumpkins are doing amazingly well though, go figure.

The zucchini thing is a kick in the pants. Do you have any theories for your lack of zucchini? I am thinking the cold nights here are causing blossom rot. There doesn't seem to be a problem for the people at the farmer's market though!
