Now is the time to start planting a fall garden in this area. Since my available garden space is still producing tomatoes, herbs, winter squash, peppers, and eggplant, my fall garden will be in containers. Try planting chard, winter squash, pumpkins, and potatoes in containers of various sizes. We can even get two more crops of tender greens and spinach as the weather cools.
Here is a website for planting dates for fall vegetables.

Why not plant a lot of one item that keeps well, such as carrots or winter squash, and start your own micro-enterprise by selling it through a farmers market or food cooperative? This is a great idea for teenagers. They can learn something about work and entrepreneurship.
If you are in Oklahoma, don't forget to check out the Oklahoma Food Cooperative! Many thanks, as usual to Bob Waldrop, our president.
Margaret,
Thank you for sharing the website with fall garden planting dates. I've been thinking about just that subject and trying to figure out when to start which plants. It seems your season in Oklahoma is a bit earlier than ours, and stretches a bit longer, but the website's planting schedule gives me a very helpful basis from which to work.
Happy local eating!
