Strawberries !

Posted at 9:45 AM on June 20, 2008 by Donna McClurkan (3 Comments)

My Locavore Nation counterparts, April and Sareen wrote about them. Vera did too, in her Farm Girl blog. So did Scott - twice! Check out these incredible photographs accompanying his second blog. I hope Autumn's berries survived the flood earlier this month.

It's strawberry time in Michigan, too. Specifically, June bearing strawberries. And not a minute too soon - we are craving fruit big time! A few scattered roadside fruit stands are manned and the "U Pick" and "Local Strawberries" signs beckon.

Strawberries_Anto.JPGA while back, we volunteered to help weed a large organic strawberry bed for a nearby farm in exchange for access to the fruit. Here is our friend, Antonella, a foreign exchange student from Argentina, showing off the fruits of our labor - literally. We've been eating these juicy, bright red berries with salad greens from our CSA, out of hand and adding them to smoothies.

Yum.

Strawberries are the best! I like how you are exchanging your labor for the fruits of the vine - way cool! I have been helping a couple of friends with their gardens once a week and I get a nice bunch of fresh goodies - I can't wait till I get some space to have my own garden.

I am curious to find out if Antonella eats strawberries when she is home in Argentina? Are they native to her country or imported like many of ours are?

Nice posting Donna!

Hey Scott - Sounds like you also have a great bartering arrangement with your gardening friends! Great question about berries in Argentina. I should have thought to ask Anto that, though I do know the berry picking she did with us was her first time. She's out of the state for the next few days, but when she returns, I'll have her post a reply, so be watching for that. Donna

Scott, first of all, thanks for asking about strawberry production in my country. I'm glad to say that Argentina produces strawberries all arround the year, in different varieties, and in different ares. I founded that the season starts on July in the north part of Argentina; but during September to Dicember it continues in the central zones, as Buenos Aires, where I happen to live.
I hope that my answer responds to your question, Scott. Where I live strawberries are found during summer (arround Dicember),and they are very good.
