Eating locally to save money?

Posted at 12:12 PM on June 4, 2008 by Sareen Dunleavy Keenan

I know that many people talk to me about how rich Brendan and I must be to be able to afford our local food lifestyle. I will continue to argue, but not commit to actually doing the numbers like Tim is doing, that we are not spending more money on food. We don't have extra money to throw around like that.

Here is a quick example, I was on a party planning committee at work and we were doing desserts. Hooray... another excuse for me to buy cake right? Turns out that that card had been played too recently and the rest of the team wanted to mix it up. Cheesecake was what was voted on. And where better to get cheesecake then from a factory?

I am really not looking to pick on anyone's cheesecake choices, but just to talk about the numbers. Well... that and poke a bit of fun at the name of the store. You get your cheesecake from a factory? Really? That sounds good to you? I digress.

Your choices:
Two 8 inch cheese cakes, one plain and one strawberry, for $45 - serves 12 with average pieces

1 10 inch 5 layer cake, chocolate or vanilla with choice of filling for $24 - serves 20 with very large pieces

Trust me, good local food does not have to cost an arm and a leg.

On another note, Brendan and I were winners of the drawing at The Produce Exchange. We bring our bags weekly to stock up on the produce we need. Remembering to bring our bags in week after week paid off! Hooray!
