Internet + Food = Community. This equation best describes what happened last weekend when many members of our Southwest Michigan listserv got together for a potluck.

By way of explanation, the event name reflects both the spirit of the 100 Mile Diet (made famous by the authors of Plenty: One Man, One Woman and a Raucous Year of Eating Locally), and our confidence we'd reach 100 members on our listserv by the time the event was to take place. The 100th member joined Friday – two days before our potluck.
What a feast we had! Here’s a sampling of the local dishes: Chris brought rutabaga fritters, Lori made two pumpkin pies, Dave brought ham, and we contributed elk chili. Anne, Bill, Steve and Teresa brought whole wheat bread made with Archie’s flour and an amazing gratin that included their farm grown potatoes and sunchokes. We had chocolate cake topped with mulberries, goat cheese dips, venison enchiladas, flat bread and so much more.
Dishes were labeled with signs, some decorated by the kids. Ron and Soo, founders of Dancing Turtle Farm & Dairy, created this post-card sized note ...
... so we’d know their Khaki Campbell ducks and LaMancha goats provided ingredients for the Chevre Pesto Quiche. Even the paper was local (grasses from their garden and field).
Here is the youngest locavore in attendance, baby Cho, with her mom, Katie.
Our potluck was the 4th get-together since the listserv started just over two months ago. This speaks volumes about the community building capacity of the internet.
Your get together seems to have combined all the necessary elements of the good life; really wonderful food, convivial get togethers, meeting new people, stimulating your local economy, earth friendly, all very cool. May be we could start some kind of group like that here....hmmm.
Thanks for sharing, Vera

Hi Vera - thanks for the feedback. The time involved to start and manage the listserv is minimal - it does take a dedicated moderator but the payoff is huge and event logistics are really easy to manage this way.
