Thursday is the big day Brendan has been waiting for. No, not quite the trip home, but it is high on the list of great things upcoming, but Thursday is the day we get our 20 week ultrasound pictures. With no kicking for him to feel, the pictures will be the first chance for him to get a good sense of who will be joining our family. We will not be finding out the sex (hopefully) but will know that things are proceeding as planned (again, hopefully).
Immediately after the appointment, we will be heading down interstate 35 to Des Moines and hanging a right on I 80. Any idea of local food joints that we might be able to hit along those routes? Pregnant ladies and babies get hungry! I have read about the work that Gina has put into packing, and I have to admit, I am not up for the challenge of that much preparation.
I would love suggestions to, from or in Omaha.
I have been following Locavore Nation with great interest. I am currently attending the Institute for the Culinary Arts at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha. I actually jumped at the chance to help create a cookbook for the Nebraska Food Cooperative due in part to the need for information about eating locally! I am not aware of restaurants that use local ingredients. (not that I am an authority) Your best bet is to visit www.vegatarianusa.com/city/Nebraska.html. You can check out the few vegetarian offerings in the heart of beef country!!! I will ask some of my instructors if there are any additional restaurants! I don't think there is a high demand in Omaha for local food establishments--YET! Good luck. I look forward to your adventures!

Hi Sareen,
I hope that the ultrasound goes well. I just had my 20 week ultrasound a few weeks back. I hope that you find good food as you travel. I appreciate how hard it is to keep up with the local foods while on the road and pregnant!
Just wanted to send a note of solidarity :-).

I know there is a great vegetarian, vegan and a few meat choices at McFoster's Natural Kind Cafe. It is a very unique dining spot that I'm pretty sure they use quite a bit of local products. They do have a website also.
Good Luck

Wow, 6 hours in the car (the back seat of the car I might add) is a significant challenge! I didn't recover for at least 36 hours from that adventure. Baby looks good if not overly active.
Thanks for the advice on the local eating. Because I wasn't feeling well, meals were all at home and lovingly prepared for me. It is hard to say when the prime rib hits the table that all I want is tapioca pudding and a nap.
