non-local local

Posted at 11:02 PM on March 16, 2008 by Vera Schabicki

I got a very cool non- local local gift from my mom. Her job was a casualty of the California real estate market so suddenly she has time to mess around in her kitchen. She has THREE olive trees in her yard and her good friend Heidi has a lovely orange tree in her yard (I had one in my yard too, I really miss it). My mom figured out how to cure olives, make olive tapenade, orange marmalade and candied orange peel. She kindly sent a couple of care packages....My kids and visitors all loved them, we ate all the olives in minutes and then sopped up the sauce with fresh bread. It sounds silly, but I am always amazed that the home made stuff is so exceptionally delicious. (I snuck and ate all the orange marmalade myself.......tut, tut.)

Best Wishes, Vera
