So Little Time

Posted at 11:08 PM on February 27, 2008 by Vera Schabicki (5 Comments)

Do other people feel a rushing around sense, a real lack of time?

I get so little spare time in the day, and then I sit to write my blog and I get wrapped up reading everybody else's blogs instead. After laughing at Tim' s humour and admiring Barbara's kindness, wondering how I would cope with moving while being pregnant, and on and on (This is a soap opera addiction!) and reading all the cool comments, my little window of time has gone. (My glue is melting.)

I wanted to comment on bulk items. I buy all of my spices, fair trade coffee, unbleached sugar, natural grooming items (I try to avoid all sodium laurel sulfite, as it is supposed to cause brain tumours and one of my kids has already been there and done that.) from Frontier Natural Foods Cooperative. If you pay a one time fee of $10 you become a wholesale member and get all their stuff way less expensive than from Wild Oats. If you order $250 at a time you get free shipping, so I got me some friends and ordered away... I even get a little check every year that is my portion of the co-op's profit. So save some money, support fair trade organic natural cool stuff and get yourself a Frontier account!

I also really like Mary Jane's Farm, in Moscow, Idaho. She is cool and beautiful (I am a sucker for a pretty face) and has a really neat magazine and great organic packaged foods that she put together to promote local organic farming.

Best Wishes, Vera

Hi Vera,
Frontier rocks! It's so nice to realize that you can save an incredible amount of money on things like organic bulk spices that cost a fortune for a tiny amount in the supermarket.

Vera,

So glad to have a southern "neighbor" on this board. I've been in a local food coop for over 10 years. Currently we purchase from www.morningsidebuyingclubs.com
They do deliver to Mississippi or you can order directly. Check it out.

Hi Vera - I just checked Frontier out. Very cool! I didn't know about them. I am always feeling pinched for time and I think many of us are in the same boat. So little time, so much to do! While we are enjoying the locavore life, it is almost like having another job. The process of trying to achieve 80% sustainable, writing the blogs, and reading the blogs. When do we have time to sleep? A sense of humor helps. Take care, Barbara

Yes, thanks Vera for the lead on Frontier!

I am with Barbara - shifting to a locavore diet certainly requires more effort than running into the store and buying a bunch of bananas or a bag of pre-mixed salad.

But, for me, knowing that that additional time and effort is bringing me a little bit closer to the earth, to the source of my food, and to a more sustainable world, it has added a value (connection?) that has been missing in my life for a number of years.

Will have to check out your Moscow Idaho link - nothing like having a new local resource!

Hi Vera,

I totally sympathize with your comment about time. I didn't realize that eating local would involve so much time in front of the monitor.

I can't image how much planning you must do daily to keep a family of 7 fed. Incredible.

High five from NC,
