Seeing It in Print

Posted at 3:24 PM on February 22, 2008 by Margaret Hochla (3 Comments)

Our local newspaper, The Daily Oklahoman, recently ran an article in the FOOD section about the
Locavore Nation project. The interviewer was great! She asked about concerns and challenges and discoveries. I didn't realize they would give it such a big spread and should probably have dampened my enthusiasm and ideas a little.

Things really started to move when the interviewer said we needed to arrange a time for a photographer to shoot some pictures. We set a Monday night before scouts and ballet. Things went well until the photographer said,"let me get some pictures of you making dinner."

I must have heard the interviewer say that would be part of the photo session, but I guess I just disregarded it. We do a lot of cooking together on weekends, so we took a deep breath and started in. I hadn't prepped the kitchen or the refrigerator like they do on those cooking shows, so the photographer was truly in a reality show! We had to pull things out of cabinets and the refrigerator, and keep the ingredients as local as possible.

We didn't have much time before our evening events and he didn't want to stay forever, so we made pizzas. I was so pleased to realize that we could pull out bags of local and organic white and whole wheat flour, tomato sauce from the freezer put back last summer, mozzarella from Hardesty Farms in the Panhandle, fresh frozen oregano, basil, thyme, fennel from coop deliveries all last year, Italian sausage from another local producer, and a few olives , not local but within the 80% goal.

It was a fascinating experience and we were pleased to be able to have on hand and to reach for so naturally these ingredients. It "proved" to us that we are have already been "walking the talk". It wasn't until I read it in print when the article was published that I began to realize how much an impact our nation-wide efforts could have. I was even more determined to try my best throughout the year.

Margaret,

Your venture is certainly an admirable one. Although local and/or organic is not readily available in NW Oklahoma we are committed to providing healthy choices to people in Oklahoma. We have transistioned our entire farming operation from traditional to organic. We have organic flour and beef; we'd be pleased to introduce you to these "local" products. And, best wishes as you move forward with your year-long committment.

Hi Margaret,
Good job puling together a true local dinner! Do you have a link to the article? I'd love to see it. I was just interviewed by the Reno Gazette Journal and am relieved reading your blog. I was super nervous to have the food critic watch me cook!
Your fellow Locavore in Nevada,
Leslie
