Eating local foods has forced us to try things we usually don't try. Two recent finds that have been surprisingly good are pumpkin seed oil and sorghum syrup. Both are made in Wisconsin (Hay River and Elkhart Lake, respectively). These products were not on my radar screen before this little adventure of buying local.
The pumpkin seed oil is great on salad. Very earthy tasting. The sorghum syrup-a lighter version of molasses, is very good in ginger snap cookies, and can be used as a sugar substitute in baking, though I haven't gone beyond the cookies as of yet. Both are loaded with anti-oxidants. So it is a win-win-win situation; good for us, good for the environment and good for the local economy.
