Winter veggies, sort of

Posted at 9:10 AM on February 7, 2008 by Cher Stuewe-Portnoff

It's been a few years since I canned veggie and fruit products from our own garden (except the tomato butter this year, from the last round of farmers market tomatoes). But in my do-it-yourself-or-forego-them-entirely mindset about jams and pickled things, I'd skipped over the canned goods category when filling my online co-op shopping cart. Oversight!

In my pantry now -- one jar of tangy pickled beets from Granny's (Chandler), and a second from Cocina San Pasqual (Perkins). Chow-chow made from locally grown, chemical-free cabbage, onions and green tomatoes (Earth Elements Farm, Lexington); also EEF's plum jelly from Oklahoma red plums. Something new to us - garlicky, spicy Makall Stuffed Eggplant pickles from Cocina, eggplant grown in Payne county. None of this, save the plum jam, is comfort food -- it's more in the category of eye-opening, wake-up-and-pay-attention stuff. Really good!

All blue-ribbon-quality, good as anyone's grandma ever made, eye-candy in their sparkling glass canning jars. I guess there's more than one way to get locally grown fruits and veggies on the table in the winter around here.
