Among life's little surprises, we just learned that we're returning to St. Louis a couple of months earlier than expected. Before we go, we have to express our gratitude for the OK Food Co-op producers and volunteers who made it possible for us to eat locally while here -- we'll miss you.
So we'll start over with an empty pantry to fill, fewer people to feed -- the former a plus; the latter a big, big minus in our books. St. Louis, especially around University City -- where do we go to find the local stuff? Any cafes that buy local? We'll let you know what we find when we get there.
I live in U.City!
Lots of local food stuff going on. Local convivium co-leader Sara Hale and her sister are launching a CCSA this year - https://www.fairshares.org/ Local meat, veggies, cheese, eggs, shrooms 11 months of the year.
Also, Winslow's Home is set to open (finally - was supposed to be last Fall, now looking imminent) soon at the corner of Midland and Delmar. It will a local food grocery store/garden supply shop, owned by some local farmer's market purveyors. It's along the lines of Local Harvest market in the City ( http://www.localharvestgrocery.com/ ) but with gardening and home supplies too.
Plenty of restaurants doing local in the U.City area. Riddles, of course, and Harvest on Big Bend in Richmond Heights, Terrene in the CWE, the Dubliner downtown, Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood, gosh, just lots.
Monthly winter markets at Bottleworks too. Benne's Best Meat in St. Charles kicking out their outstanding beef, pork, chicken and eggs. The Sappington Farmer's Market in Crestwood was just bought by a consortium of local farmer's. You can even get local beef at some Schnuck's!
The local food scene in St. Louis is kicking.
Here's the convivias' new website: http://www.slowfoodstl.org/
Feel free to drop an e-mail too.

Excellent comments, Dave ... that's exactly what I was going to say!
The local food scene here in St. Louis is definitely on the rise, and I invite all those interested in learning more to the next Slow Food St. Louis meeting on March 12th ... tentative location is The Schlafly Tap Room (Details Here)
