Callister Farm Chicken

Tonights dinner tastes great. I don't even have to make it home, and smell the wonderful bird roasting in the oven to know it. Every chicken I have ever had from Callister farm's has been fabulous. Don't believe me? Check out this article to confirm.

I have read other posts about people struggling with the texture and taste of local meats. This is something that I really want to know more about. I am amazed and have never heard anything like it! We have only found bliss when switching to local meats. In fact, Brendan swore off all chicken before he met the fresh birds that Lori Callister had on offer. Now we are lucky enough to have one a month.

I would like to know more about people's experiences with local meats. Three times recently we have done head to head taste tests with local and store bought meats of the same cut. Every time I was able to pick the local meat by both taste and visual. Get out, support your local farmers and treat yourself to some fine meat tonight! I get mine primarily at Farm in the Market at Midtown Global Market but it doesn't matter where you get your meat, if you choose meat, choose local.

I just found this project and your blog through MNSpeak! Yes, Callister farm chickens are delicious.
Midtown Global Market is great! I get local cheeses at Farm in the Market, especially the sheep cheeses from Shepherds' Way. Their Freisago is my favorite, but the blue runs a close second.

The quality of locally raised meat (like local produce) varies. When we lived in Columbia, MO. we regularly drove out to Bonne Femme for their wonderful pasture-raised chickens, and bought beef from Show-Me Farms and pork from Patchwork Farms. We were totally spoiled by these and other local producers for "store-bought" meats. But it takes know-how and a lot of effort to make it work. Here in OK, we've bought chickens from three different farms - two were great, one was not to our taste. We've also tried OK naturally raised pork, beef, lamb and buffalo, most (not all) were superior in flavor, texture, and leanness. Maybe some meat producers need a few seasons to perfect breed selection, health care, feeding, and processing techniques to deliver a consistently good product. All locally raised chickens are not equal! But there are so many good reasons for finding and buying from those producers who get it right.

Joanna, I LOVE their cheeses. It is my favorite addition to their store. I look at them every week, but I am one to go straight for the blue, and during pregnancy, blue is not recommended. I will try the Freisago next week. I am excited.

That of course makes sense about the local meats. I am so lucky to have only tried the good ones I guess! We have friends in the beef and lamb business and decided to support them instead of shopping around for taste. I bet that if we did shop around we would have known how lucky we are!
