A notebook of sorts came out of the book tour Sally and I did. Over the coming weeks, anything that makes sense from the scribbles I made will show up here. This is the first entry from back in September.

I'm looking down at my lunch and chuckling. I'm in Washington, D.C., on tour with our book How to Eat Weekends. Last night, I got a text from a friend asking where I was wining and dining today. Oh, the grand illusion of the cookbook author on tour.

Today's wining and dining is captured for posterity in the accompanying photo, and it's pretty typical of what we book-tour types wine and dine on much of the time: the perennial dry airport sandwich, the coffee I hope was better a couple of hours ago, and the bottle of water for the plane.

Reality Check: Publishers send authors on tours to sell books. If an author returns from said tour rested and well fed, something has gone horribly wrong.

Am I complaining? No. Am I tickled that we do a food show, and that everywhere we go radio station people set up gatherings where we get to talk with listeners and toss around ideas? Yes. And do those same station folk and others seem primed to feed us first-class local food even if it's on the fly? Absolutely!

Are there maybe 10,000 worse jobs in this world? Yeah, airport haute cuisine and all.
