The Winter is Long

Post to the Host:
What is the origin of the song "The Winter is Long" sung by GK and Becky Schlegel? I though it was very pretty, but also thought I had heard a similar tune before.

Your keen ear detected an old English folk song, "Waly Waly," or "The Water Is Wide," which goes "The water is wide, I cannot get over, and neither have I wings to fly. Give me a boat that can carry two, and both shall row, my love and I." A perfect song for Becky's delicate beautiful twisting soprano, so I changed it to "The winter is long, it will never be over" and you can find it in the archives.
