A Summery Day in Salem

September 10, 2010

PHC staffer Ella Schovanec is on the Summer Love tour with Garrison, Sara Watkins, Fred Newman and The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band and will update us periodically from the road.

Well, last night Sam, Thomas, Ken, Tom, and Noah packed up the stage, stuffed it under our tour bus, and put it all back together today in Salem, Virginia. It's no small feat, let me tell you.

It was an absolutely glorious day, sunny, breezy, seventy-five, one of the last true days of summer, and we savored it. We stayed in Roanoke and set up the show in Salem and so we got to enjoy both of the twin towns. Amazing dry rub ribs, charming farmers markets in each city, and good strong coffee at hole-in-the wall cafes, what's not to love?

Everyone in this part of the country addresses a person as "sir" or "ma'am," and I'm starting to realize that I need to brush up on my manners during this Southern leg of the tour. So, a gracious thank you, ladies and gentlemen of our Salem audience, we must now trade the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley for the blue crabs of Baltimore.
