Summer Love Tour: The first days

August 12, 2010

PHC staffer Nic Vetter is on the Summer Love tour with Garrison, Sara Watkins, Fred Newman and The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band and will update us periodically from the road.

The tour's inaugural show last night in Interlochen was fantastic — the audience (sold out!) was enthusiastic despite the humidity, and there were minimal problems on the production side which could have went either way considering Sam and Thomas have barely worked with the new equipment (but they are old pro's so no one was worried). The whole thing is a logistical feat and Deb B. has been handling it under pressure as gracefully as a swan. If I think about it too much I start reeling. I caught up on my ZZZ's by unintentionally sleeping until noon because my phone was on silent, so was at a disadvantage for starting my walkabout around Grand Rapids. Too bad, because what I saw was rather nice.

It's a gorgeous sunny evening in Grand Rapids, and the weather's beauty is only heightened by our surroundings here in the Frederik Meijer Gardens — or maybe it's the other way around. The amphitheatre is part of 125 acres of sprawling botanic gardens with a sculpture park and a conservatory. It's the Garden's 15th anniversary and they are celebrating with an exhibition of Dale Chihuly sculptures which are these amazing, whimsical and almost Dr. Suess-like glass pieces incorporated into the garden landscape. Check out the pictures!

The giant bronze horse is actually called the "American Horse" by Nina Akamu, it was constructed after the vision of Leonardo Da Vinci's horse sculpture that he never made.
