what’s in it for me is ever higher taxes and more shame of being a citizen of a government that has turned our military into a mercenary force waging illegal and immoral wars halfway around the world. Those involved should be ashamed rather than being rewarded with money for “education.”

You are confused. The people who should be ashamed and not rewarded are the ‘powers that be’ that got us into these wars in the first place. The man on the ground is doing his best to follow orders that he believes in. The rare exception is the person who speaks out, much like John Kerry did after Vietnam. To lay the blame on these men and women and also bitch about the cost to you is selfish and foolish.

I am not eligible for the GI Bill but it is important to me. The health of our nation rests with doing everything we can to improve our education including, of course, making higher education available and affordable. I am greatly relieved that our troops will gain the right to a good education as they did under the first GI Bill.
