The greenhouse effect… global warming… climate change. Do they mean the same thing, or are they different?

Marketplace wants to know what you know about climate change, where you get your info, and what we can help you learn. What do you know — and what do you believe?

I am not only aware of what most scientists are finding, but I have personal experience with global warming. In 1982, I ran an erosion protection project in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. At that time, we could see the ice cap on the horizon. In 2006, I was back in Prudhoe Bay during an Alaskan trip with my wife at about the same time of year and you could not see the ice cap. That was visual proof to me of global warming.

I notice that there is a lot more talk about “climate change” now than “global warming,” apparently because the globe is now cooling.

Climate changes. Get used to the idea. We can’t cause it or stop it. All we poor little animals can do is adapt to it.

If you read the scientific research, you would know that human actions are accelerating climate change.

“Environmental change” is more accurate and also enables a better understanding of what is going on (not limited to current situation and not limited to greenhouse effect). There’s a large literature and lengthy history of human biological and cultural adaptations to environmental change from which to learn about this recent.

Since “naming” is a preoccupation of humans, let’s try Global Climate Chaos - some areas of the earth may cool while the overall temperature is rising… all peer reviewed studies concur with this observation. We know the frequency and intensity of storms is increasing. As a participant at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, I received press releases from the Global Climate Change Coalition - fancy sounding name with a very fancy newsletter filled with PhD. Scientists on the mast head. Every article debunked all the studies that were attempting to warn humans about the harmful effects of increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. It was discovered many years later that the entire publication and all the scientists were being funded by the polluters. Chemical companies, Automobile manufacturers, Oil and Gas companies and others. When they were caught intentionally spreading misinformation - none denied it. We are now at 386 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere and it is increasing rapidly while all of our carbon sinks are reaching saturation. During the last 750,000 years of the Earth’s climate history the CO2 concentrations in our atmosphere never rose above 350 parts per million. Global climate change or chaos (take your pick) is real, it’s here to stay & we’re causing it with our industrial practices and personal habits of energy consumption. Anyone who argues we’re not, is either ignoring reality, hiding behind a literal interpretation of the Bible or has a vested personal financial interest in maintaining the status quo. Did I leave anyone out? It really is that simple.
