Job of the day

We’re asking the Network questions this week about preparing for tax season this year. Birck Cox wrote in from Philly, and yup, he’s planning on filing taxes this year. But what makes him interesting to me is his job: he’s a medical illustrator. What does a medical illustrator do? Cox says it’s simple: “I draw guts.”
I couldn’t resist, and checked out his website. Apparently, “guts” can be beautiful.
I wonder if the economic downturn is affecting the market demand for medical illustrations?
UPDATE: So I asked Birck if he was feeling the recession yet. Seems he’s insulated from the downturn, at least so far. He says:
There has been some cutting back in one area: the research journals, which don’t show up on newsstands, have reduced their total illustration budgets, but that started early last year. The season generally dips around now because the doctor/authors take long vacations in exotic climes, but most of them are back by now, and, seasonally, things are starting to pick up. I just got a new cluster of assignments this afternoon, in addition to a decent one last week, plus two books currently underway. So: I’m doing OK.
