How do you prove to skittish lenders that your down payment is truly your own money? Lizelle Kopinski of Springfield, Virginia, jumped through flaming hoops to prove the money came from wedding gifts in order to get her loan approved.
Her lender kept demanding proof that $4,000 of the cash she and husband Oliver were using as a down payment came from wedding well-wishers. Marriage certificate? Not good enough. Copies of the checks? Not enough proof. How about a spreadsheet? No go.
I started to get very frustrated with the whole process asking the loan officer how else she would suggest I prove this cash was from some 150 guests who had attended our wedding 2-3 months ago!
Finally, she scanned some 40 wedding greeting cards on which she had noted the gift amounts. That was proof enough and they got their loan.
It truly was the most ridiculous part of the whole process.
