The bottom of everything

My weekly podcast, After the Bell, is now available. Today, I talk to Henry Blodget of the Business Insider about the bad deal taxpayers are getting on GMAC, and his ideas for resolving the Too Big to Fail problem. Plus, I’ll put this week’s GDP and housing news in some perspective. Musical assistance from Bright Eyes and The Gap Band, among others. If you’d like the podcast to download automatically each Friday, click here. Click continue reading to listen now.

You asked if there is much substance in the public’s will to make things happen. I would love to make things happen, but I am absolutely stumped. What CAN we do? If we cancel our credit cards our credit scores tank. We vote for change and we find out that our representatives are owned by their corporate contributors. Of course the media didn’t pay much attention to the protests in Chicago. Their advertisers wouldn’t like it. Thank God for the internet, at least we still have that. I know what we need but I don’t know how we get it. We need campaign finance reform so that politicians aren’t beholden to corporations. We need at least one other viable political party. We need to stop policing the world. We need universal, single payer health insurance. All of that is a long, long way from where we are. Show me how to start and I’ll be there. Any ideas?

Kristina, you couldn’t have said it any better. We need to have a brainstorming session. I’ll do one on the blog next week and see if we can come up with some practical solutions.

Henry Blodget - are you kidding? Why not Jack Grubman? Or Jeff Skilling? Or Bernie Ebbers? Or hell, Bernie Madoff?

I think I’ll pass on reading this piece.

No worries. But those are absurd comparisons, and you know it.
