Education Week on KPCC
The week of October 17-21, KPCC will be taking a close look at the state of K-12 public education in southern California. As we planned what we wanted to focus on, we had to deal with the fact that this is such a huge subject, there's no way we can cover every facet of the topic. We will try to provide a broad sweep, however, as well as opportunities for you to weigh in.
Our team of reporters will be producing features on: activist parents; a principal shortage in the Inland Empire; the success story at Long Beach Polytechnic High School; the breakup of Santa Monica High School into smaller academies; a day in the life of L.A.'s Jefferson High School; and much more. Our talk shows will explore a variety of issues, including: the funding imbalance; the challenge of dealing with so many English learners; teacher training and retention; the role of parents; magnets; and charters.

Procrastination
This week. I promise. I will get started on my disaster kit.
I sent the husband to Target to look for a large trash can on wheels to keep in the garage to hold items.

Winter Rain Predictions
Everybody loves to talk about the weather...including us. Today we spoke with Channel 4's weather dude Fritz Coleman and with Dr. Bill Patzert, the JPL climatologist man who coined the phrase "La Nada" (meaning a year without either an El Nino or a La Nina current.) Both made predictions about how much rain we're going to get this winter. Let's find out who's right.
Here's their predictions:
FRITZ: 14.7 inches
DR. BILL: 12.0 inches
What do you think?

True Confessions
I admit it. I haven't done a darned thing yet to start my earthquake kit. Some role model I am!
Yes, I have a valid excuse: I've been sick as a dog. I didn't want to infect everyone at Target and the 99 Cent Store with the flu.
But this weekend, I promise to make a start.
How about you? If you're one of those responsible people who's had an earthquake kit for years and updates it annually, let me know. If you, like me, have just started getting your emergency kit act together, let me know as well.
Let's get this done!

Emergency Preparedness
Something to keep in mind is the advantage of creating your own first aid kit. One is cost; the ability to put together all the contents from a 99 cents store or Rite Aid. But perhaps an even more important reason is if you put it together yourself, you're more likely to remember what the contents are. That could become critical in an emergency when you need to act quickly. Chances are, if you purchased the kit, you may not ever really go through it and know all of the contents.

Emergency Preparedness...More
Okay. I'm going to finally get started on my emergency kit. As I go along, I will include my list of supplies -- and the price. I'm determined to do this on the cheap.
Wanna help?
Send me your cost-saving tips for compiling an earthquake kit.
And a listener asked a good question today: whose responsibility is it to provide emergency supplies to those who can barely afford to put food on the table? Will southern California present the face of New Orleans to the rest of the world after our next disaster?

Political Conventions
Anybody got any good stories about attending state political conventions?
Tomorrow, "Talk of the City" broadcasts live from the Anaheim Marriott, site of the 2005 California Republican Party State Convention. We'll have the latest on Governor Schwarzenegger's expected announcement that he'll seek a second term, party plans for getting out the vote for the November special election, and hopes for increasing the number of Republicans in the state legislature.
Have you ever served as a delegate? What was it like? Got any pictures?
Please share your memories and stories!

Emergency Preparedness Kit Redux
Listener Sandi requested a repeat of that web site with a helpful list of emergency supplies. It's located in the archive for August. But here it is again:

Now I Know Why the Telephone Works
Today's power outage raised a question I couldn't answer: why do our phone lines (some of them) work during a power outage? Leave it to our beloved KPCC listeners to come up with the answer. Engineer Todd Thompson sent us an email while we were on the air today and explained it all. He says:
"Normal phone lines that plug into the wall in your home (the ones that do not have a power plug that plugs into the wall) are run off of batteries that are stored in the phone company's central office. Power outages do not affect these phone lines. For this reason it's good to have at least one of these types of phones in your home (i.e. a phone that is not a wireless phone nor a phone that has any AC plug of any type) as these phones may be used during power outages."
It's the best part about "Talk of the City" -- I learn something new every day!

Welcome to California
Welcome to California, Megan. Tell your dad not to worry. Despite all our bad press over the years, southern California truly does have a strong sense of community.
