Middle of the night at MCL Distributing

MCL Distributing

I wish that I’d brought my parka. It’s three o’clock in the morning in downtown Los Angeles, and I am touring MCL Distributing, Inc: Distributors of Fine Produce. Chief Operating Officer Robert Lake is our refrigerated warehouse guide and he is in shirtsleeves, not shivering. He is used to the temperature as well as the hour. I don’t know that I could get used to either.

MCL staff is busy loading trucks and getting pallets ready for the day’s orders of fresh fruits and vegetables. They are all such hard workers at this early hour. I wonder how they keep their eyes open, much less focus so earnestly on their customers that have sent large 18 wheelers to wait for their orders. But they seem to be used to it, just a job they do every day like the rest of us in Southern California. I wonder how these hours affect their family lives. I wonder if they notice the difference of the city at night. Maybe they don’t think of these things at all, and are just happy to be a part of the commerce of the night. Just glad to have a good, steady job.
When we leave the facility it is so still in downtown L.A., the skyline looks like a ghost in the distance.
