Drug-related violence spreads north in Mexico

In recent years, drug-related violence has spread from Mexico’s central regions to as far north as Tijuana, where authorities reported 34 homicides last weekend. Richard Marosi, who reports from Mexico for the Los Angeles Times, told KPCC’s “Patt Morrison” that powerful drug cartels are able to corrupt high officials in law enforcement and politics.

Richard Marosi: “For those who don’t turn and help the cartels, they’re intimidated or threatened. So either you give in to the corruption or you pay with your life. That’s often this dark choice that these officers and law enforcement officials face.”

Marosi said the narcotics trade in Mexico is worth an estimated $40 billion a year.
