Senator Dodd Endorses Obama

Senator Chris Dodd endorsed presidential candidate Barack Obama today. Dodd is the first 2008 Democratic presidential candidate to make an endorsement. Other former Democratic candidates John Edwards, Bill Richardson, Joe Biden, and Dennis Kucinich have all remained on the sidelines to date.

There has been concern over the prospect of superdelegates going against the pledged delegate total, popular vote, and/or number of states won, and tipping the election. Dodd himself is a superdelegate. Obama has been picking up more superdelegate endorsements, while Hillary Clinton has lost some who had previously committed to her.

Who do you think has momentum in the Democratic race? Hillary Clinton? Barack Obama? Mike Gravel? Do you think there's a chance it could shift directions? If so, how?

What impact do you think Dodd's endorsement will have? What impact would the endorsements of other 2008 Democratic candidates have, and will they endorse soon? How about former vice president/2000 Democratic nominee Al Gore? Who do you think any of them would endorse? Tell us your thoughts in our comments!

Frances E Rodriguez:

What is Patriotism?

A nagging question comes to my mind as I watch the current presidential race move into full gear. What are the roles of patriotism and fear in the policies of the candidates? Are we Americans actually afraid of change in our lives and of candidates who propose it? Are the candidates of change unpatriotic?

Looking back to the founding of this country, we see brave men and women willing to take great risks to create new and (dare I say it?) revolutionary changes in the way things were done. From their vision grew a nation in which the common man and woman had increasing opportunity to participate in politics and society as never before possible. Granted, it took time for opportunity to reach all citizens, perhaps too much time. How much longer do we have to wait for all Americans to fully participate in our society? What is the cost of making our nation work well for all its members, and to have all its members work well for their nation? Finally, are we too comfortable and selfish to give more than lip service to changing our America?

I wonder, when did the idea of change and risk taking become demonized? I suspect that most liberals as well as conservatives are equally afraid of real change. "Sure I believe in 'green power'. Oh, wait, you mean I have to give up my huge gas guzzling truck? Well, never mind".

"Yes, I support equal opportunity for all races, but couldn't those people move into someone else's neighborhood?"

"Of course I support education, but don't ask me to pay more taxes!!"

"Universal health care doesn't work. I want to have a choice. Of course, I can afford to choose! Too bad if you can't!"

I contend that in our modern world, true patriotism requires looking beyond our fears. It means willingness to risk some of our comfort, and most importantly, it means considering the needs of those who come from different socioeconomic and political positions. True patriotism in our modern world should generate the question, "What will best serve all my fellow Americans", and what can I do to make it possible? Sadly, I think many American people would rather stick to waving the flag or wearing a pin than to really put themselves on the line to support their country. I am thinking of the young men and women who risk their lives to defend what they believe in as well as those who devote their lives to improving social and environmental conditions in their communities. It's time for us to come together and work for a better America for all Americans. This takes work and commitment and risk to experience change. This, I believe, is true patriotism!
