Wow, I thought some of KPCC’s staff meetings were long. I can’t believe SAG’s national board met for thirty hours. It’s clear that actors have remarkable stamina. Let’s hope something breaks to move this process forward.

It was such a pleasure to talk with Azar Nafisi this morning. Kristen and I spent quite a bit of time with her a few years ago at the Sun Valley Writers Conference in Idaho. She’s a delightful and extraordinarily well-read person. The Conference is wonderful — putting together writers of all different backgrounds for intense discussions, dinners, and outings. Many lasting friendships have come out of Reva Tooley’s terrific event.

Tomorrow, we’ll air the Eric Holder Senate confirmation hearings. During the lunch break, we’ll look at the Justice Department Holder would inherit and the controversial pardons with which he was involved. I’ll talk with you then.

AirTalk for Wednesday, January 14

The Board of the Screen Actors Guild was on the verge of a strike vote yesterday, but developments last night may prevent a strike from happening. Actors in the 120,000-member guild have been working without a contract on movies and prime-time TV shows since June 30. What deal would you like negotiators to strike with the producers’ guild?

A state panel reports that Jessica’s Law, the voter-approved initiative that prevents sex offenders from living near schools and parks, isn’t working. The report states the housing restrictions placed on sex offenders are pushing many into homelessness, which may lead some to re-offend. Should the law be re-tooled?

AirTalk continues it look at President Bush’s legacy: what environmental and energy policies will he likely be remembered for?

Larry's Daily Comment

No fireworks this time out in the confirmation of Senator Clinton. It appears she’ll sail through this process, after answering more questions about her husband’s foundation.

We’re looking at the legacy of President Bush this week, and it’s fascinating to hear differing perceptions among Republicans. When a party’s winning, like the Democrats, it’s a lot easier to set aside internal differences. When your party’s getting hammered, factionalism comes to the fore. As someone who really enjoys the ideas behind politics, I’m looking forward to hearing more of these internal GOP debates. What we didn’t get into this morning, was the huge demographic challenge the party faces. We’ll have more on that to come. I’ll talk with you tomorrow, when we look at Bush’s legacy on environmental and energy policies.

And here’s a request from our newsroom: we’re interested in interviewing members of Saddleback Church in Orange County, as well as people who’ve had experiences with Pastor Rick Warren’s book, “The Purpose Driven Life.” If you can help us, click on Contact on our website. Thanks.

Larry's Daily Comment

With just over a week left in President Bush’s term, it’s time to consider his legacy. We’re doing that this week, in between Senate confirmation hearings for Obama appointees. Today we talked foreign policy, with our listeners overwhelmingly critical of the President.

On a personal note, I turned 50 today. It’s hard for me to believe I’m this age. When I started hosting AirTalk I was only 26. I worried about whether listeners would think I was young and ignorant. One of those is no longer a worry. Thank you for your kind words and birthday greetings. They mean a lot.

Tomorrow, we don’t know when we’ll be on. KPCC will broadcast the Senate confirmation hearing for Hillary Clinton. We plan to join you during the committee’s lunch break. I’ll talk with you then.

Larry's Daily Comment

I’ve learned more about financial institutions and markets than I’d ever cared to, and still can’t get my head around the complexities of our economic meltdown. We’ll be back at it next week, as there’ll be new aspects to explore.

Can “Bride Wars” really be as lame as Film Week critic Claudia Puig says? I’d bet “yes.” “The Unborn” sounds hilariously bad. I’ve got to catch it on cable in a year. At least there are plenty of year’s end quality movies still in theaters.

Monday, we’ll look at President Bush’s foreign policy legacy. Though our guests will spiritedly debate, I’d like to hear from you. There’ll be plenty of criticism, but are there areas where you think Bush’s foreign policy succeeded, or at least lessened a bad situation? I’ll talk with you Monday. Have a great weekend.

AirTalk for January 9, 2009

In the first hour, it’s about the economy…good news for people declaring bankruptcy—CitiGroup is now supporting legislation to allow courts to reduce the principal on a primary mortgage. This is a reversal for the banking sector and may result in broad changes in the way bankruptcy judges can assist people in getting out from “underwater.” Is this good or bad for Southland consumers? Larry finds out.

And then… why won’t they lend? Banks are in the business of lending money. But despite cash infusions from the government’s bailout program, so far they just aren’t doing it. What’s going on? And how can the government get their cash back into the economy?

A new report from a congressional panel is highly critical of the Treasury Department. Remember that $350 billion taxpayers gave to banks via the government’s Troubled Asset Relief Program? Well, yes, it went to banks, but after that…nobody’s quite sure what happened to it or how it was spent. Oops. Larry sends out a search party.

Then the latest movie reviews on FilmWeek.

The blogged comments are fast and furious over the city of Los Angeles’ proposed anti-smoking ordinance. This is one of the most contentious topics we cover on AirTalk. It’s hard to beat guns and smoking for no holds barred listener passion.

Tomorrow, it’s our first FilmWeek on AirTalk of the year. A few of the year-end big pictures are also going wider. Try to catch my interview with “Frost/Nixon” screenwriter/playwright Peter Morgan. He also wrote “The Queen,” my favorite film of 2006. Morgan’s a very sharp guy and has compelling things to say about writing. I’ll talk with you tomorrow.

Larry's Daily Comment

That was a lively two hours. Between hearing each side in California’s budget impasse blame each other again for the lack of progress, to the pricetag for an economic stimulus program shooting higher, there wasn’t a lot to be optimistic about. When even the adult entertainment industry is asking for a bailout from Washington, we know these are tough times. However, we have Lou from Northridge’s blog comment on that to lighten our day.

We’re not really sure what we’re talking about tomorrow, beyond our scheduled Orange County journalists roundtable. Obama’s giving a speech about his economic stimulus plan tomorrow morning. Hopefully, there’ll be a number of specifics we can look at. We’ll figure it out between now and then. I’ll talk with you tomorrow.

It was no downer to talk about the history of tranquilizers. I didn’t know that Miltown was such a huge part of 50s era American culture, including Milton (Miltown) Berle, Mr. Television himself.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about how different L.A. leaders have tried to reform LAUSD, with minimal success and what we can learn about the District’s future. Also, should proportionately more dollars be spent on early cancer detection rather than potential treatments? We’ll debate it. Talk with you then.
