AirTalk for Monday, July 21

Larry Mantle talks with guests about the condition of California’s aging infrastructure; how black conservatives might vote in the upcoming Presidential race; and has a conversation with author Alvin Stephen Felzenberg about his new book “The Leaders We Deserve.”

All that and more.

I believe Mr. Williams hit the nail on the head when he indicated he could not vote for Obama solely based on his ethnic indentity, since it is against his belief and ideaology of equality.

It would seem to me however that Mr. Armstrong and his family has perhaps exprienced more equality in thier lives than the majority of black americans in our population.

The fact remains that the majority of African Americans, due to their socio-economic status, would benefit more from Obama (or any other non-republican/non-conservative)being president.

Today, Larry Mantel discribed Obama as "mixed race".

The fact of the matter is, all African Americans are "mixed race" and we are an indigenous people of the North American Continent--due to slavery.

What has kept us united as a people is that we have all always been called "colored" or "negro" since the sin of slavery on this continent.

All of us know that, during slavery, the white male was able to use the colored/nego slave women--and possibly men, as their sex slaves and father children (of course not with the men) and the offspring were colored/negro. Perhaps some white slave-owning white women did this as well as her word about being "raped by a negro" was unquestioned.

Please stop playing into the effort to divide African Americans and cause us to chose between being; negro, colored, mixed-race or African American. Our strength has been us being united--no matter what/who our parents were--as long as one of them had black African blood in them--since slavery, that person was "Black".

In conclusion; my fear is that African Americans will cease to exist once we begin dividing ourselve by percentage of black, white, Hispanic, Native American...other blood. This was done during slavery. Stop supporting slavery.

    Best regards,

    Louise Bell

Wondering if Armstrong Williams is getting paid to dissuade African Americans for voting for Barack Obama now? After being caught abusing his powerful position as a "journalist" why should we trust anything he says?

The idea that Reagan's tax cuts were the single reason for the improvement in the economy for the past 30 years is both naive and completely inaccurate. As Larry referenced, under Reagan the national deficit ballooned to obscene proportions which was not addressed whatsoever until Bill Clinton managed to balance the budget years later. Of course if we start living off our credit cards were going to enjoy the benefits of our spending but eventually we will be in great debt. Thanks to the similar policies of the current president we are now facing a very familiar position.

One only needs to remember the throngs of homeless people that started appearing on the streets of cities all over America during Reagan's terms to see who was getting left out of the new found prosperity. Or ask the air traffic controllers that lost their jobs due to the Reagan administration if they were better off. Or ask the migrant families in San Salvador and Nicaraguan whose family members were killed by the illegal arms that were funneled to death squads and dictators henchmen without the knowledge of congress or the American people until the Iran/Contra scandal broke.

The guest also calls out Clinton for not focusing on terrorism when he was busy fighting impeachment charges from the House for a personal indiscretion. Where is the responsibility of the Republican led House at that time? Or more importantly, the guest did not mention or bother to rate Regan on his covert support provided to the Muhajadeen in Afghanistan, including Bin Laden who were provided arms and training in their fight against the Soviets.

Any realistic assessment of past presidents should focus on the facts and not on subjective observations from clearly partisan players who seek to quantify things like "character". Judging from the authors comments this is clearly a myopic and partisan view of the past. Perhaps, the author does not recall these things?

Thank you, I suppose, for reminding us that self-interested, self-deluded voters come in all colors.

The fact that any of those guests might consider that John McCain may better serve their interests is also a remarkable study in self-hatred.

Actually, this seemed like a spectacular waste of air time. If I wanted to hear the deluded or agenda-ridden comment on the current politcal situation, I would be tuning into Fox News.

I am a cyclist in the LA area. I often take part in "Critical Mass" where enough cyclists get together to take over the space of a vehicle in the road. People in cars are so disrespectful on the road, every cyclist I know has had some sort of minor accident due to cars (not their fault). Many people just don't know that bikes have the same access to the roads as cars. There are hardly any bike lanes and people parking on the roads just intensify the problem. I hope the LA car culture can change.

In my opinion the FCC acted absurbdly, making a mountain out of a molehill. The only fortuitous result from this was that Sandra Tsing Loh came over to KPCC as a result of being fired from a neighboring station over an engineering mistake which left an expletive in her commentary. I am SO delighted that she is now at KPCC.
