I caught part of an interview with a someone talking about why we need to know the difference between short term memory and hard drives and where our downloads go. He probably also thinks we should all know how to use a standard shift car and change the tubes in our TVs. He has completely missed the point of the evolution of technology. It's started by nerds but it ends up a commodity that does stuff for people who don't understand or want to understand how it works. He won't get the iPad either. To his surprise, it will just become ubiquitous because it's not about what we put in to it, it's about what we get out of it. Balmer was wrong. It's not about developers. It's about consumers. We don't want to have to know anything. We just want stuff to work for us. The unexamined life may not be worth living but the computer we don't have to examine is the one we want.
