What we can learn by tracking trash

Is MIT crazy? While I can argue the importance of this study, you are purposefully introducing hazardous materials into the solid waste stream. The batteries and other electronic items should never be thrown out with the daily trash. You should be ashamed of putting heavy-metal contaminants into the landfills.
Another flaw is the pressure within the back of the garbage truck. Are you certain that your device will be able to withstand the 16 tons of compacting force of the truck? I doubt that many would survive the 5000 pounds of compaction in a residential unit. The few units that may survive would not give enough statistical information to be useful.
Go back to the drawing board and rethink your data collection process.
