Episode 118: Little Dragon and Big Small Talk
This week: As we ready for next week’s hour-long show premiere, we serve up two more courses from the DPD test kitchen. You’ll hear suggestions for your dinner party soundtrack from Swedish band Little Dragon, and a meatier edition of Small Talk. Plus, author Alexander Maksik flies into a moth-joke trap.
Icebreaker: Alexander Maksik Alexander Maksik, author of the much-lauded debut novel You Deserve Nothing, psyches us out (along with our joke selection).
Small Talk (Roundtable Remix): Madeleine Brand and Paddy Hirsch Marketplace Senior Editor Paddy Hirsch and Madeleine Brand of KPCC’s eponymous show join us to talk about some of the lesser-known headlines this week. It’s still small talk, but the table is a little bit bigger… let us know what you think about the four-person format.
We give you free stuff - won’t you return the favor? We’re always looking for new etiquette questions, and for your picks for your dream dinner party companion (we’re calling these “Plus Ones.”) Email us your suggestions at dinnerparty@americanpublicmedia.org. And, if you happen to be at a real life dinner party, give us a call on our RSVP hotline (a.k.a. Brendan’s office voicemail): 213-621-3554. Leave a message making us wish we were there with you. Thanks!
Dinner Party Soundtrack: Little Dragon Swedish band Little Dragon is known for swirling electronic grooves and the soulful, otherworldly vocals of frontwoman Yukimi Nagano. Last year they made a splash with an appearance on two tracks from electro-titans Gorillaz. This year their headlining tour — in support of their new album Ritual Union — is selling out venues around the world. Including L.A… where Yukimi graciously agreed to provide us with a list of her favorite party songs.
Music from this week’s show
The Sea & Cake - “The Argument”
The Carpenters - “Superstar”
Neil Young - “Old Man”
Prince - “Crazy You”
Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti - “Fright Night (Nevermore)”

well shucks. :)
I like the extended One For The Road. I get the feeling I’m going to find even more music I never knew I’d love. Are you guys going to keep giving us Easter eggs? Since I realized I need to hear the ends of the podcasts I’ve realized I do like some of the songs that I would have killed too soon because I was heading to another of the many weekend podcasts on my DMP.
I like the bigger Small Talk, and it may be even better than the Marketplaced segments that introduced me to the Dwnload. But something seems to be missing. I can’t put my finger on what it is. I seem remember something about a Link but I’ll be dammed if I can remember what it is.
I can’t wait to hear the new, longer Download. Any chance I could find it on WBUR at some point?

Hi BP - thanks for the kudos and insight. As for hearing the new longer show on WBUR, sit tight a bit as we work out the kinks of the new format over the next few episodes. We’ll send word to all our listeners when it’s time to start peppering local stations with emails begging ‘em to carry us!
The longer small talk segment is very enjoyable!
love love love the longer one for the road segment. are you willing to share a trade secret and let us all know where you tracked down that incredible version of neil young’s old man?
