Episode 93: An East-Over Feast

The Dinner Party Download Our humble menu./The Dinner Party Download

This week, feast upon our favorite food segments from podcasts past: Rico attacks a WWII-era sandwich… Brendan warily bites into a sushirrito… and we learn about really baked goods. Don’t call them leftovers; they’re East-Overs. Plus! Feast your ears on a waiter joke, and scarf down a food tune from Brendan himself.

Icebreaker: Tim Walker Tim Walker — organizer and “chief instigator” of this Saturday’s Grilled Cheese Invitational food fest in Los Angeles - fills our ears with a pungent waiter joke.

Appetizer: The Kitchen Front Last year, the Imperial War Museum in London launched a project both fascinating and questionable: The cafeteria began serving food items based on popular recipes from World War II-era Britain. Rico dropped by the museum’s “Kitchen Front” cafĂ© to get a taste of how an island nation cooked when food imports stopped… and rationing started.

Main Course: The Sushirrito California’s long been known for pan-cultural “fusion” dishes, but one still turned heads last year: The Sushirrito - an unlikely East/West collision of sushi and burrito. Brendan warily ventured over to the Jogasaki food truck to sample the invention…along with an appetizer that combines high and lowbrow in previously unimaginable ways.

Dessert: “Baked” Goods In L.A., where medical marijuana is legal, patients with a prescription can get their medicine in edible form - baked into brownies, cookies, muffins and more. But who’s cooking these things, and what’s it like to use cannabis as a foodstuff? Rico paid a visit to chef Melanie Lusk, owner of “Redeye Bakery.”

One for The Road: The Phone - “My Appetites” Pop band The Phone call up (ha!) this sweet (ha ha!) ode to good food and good love — as if there was any difference. Best listened to while crafting the meal that will make him/her fall for you. P.S. If the vocals sound familiar, why that may be because the song was composed and crooned by one of your humble hosts (hint: Brendan).

Music On This Week’s Show:

Sea & Cake - “The Argument”

Aphex Twin - “Boy/Girl Song”

Talking Heads - “Life During Wartime”

Otouto - “Sushi”

Small Faces - “Song of a Baker”

The Phone - “My Appetites”

Great show, guys! Glad to hear you’re making it longer. I have a few suggestions. The music you guys choose is always really cool, and I love Brendan’s contribution - more of his original songs would be great. You should have a musical sequeway mid-show as well during which you can suggest people get a snack or log on to your website. Also, you should always have a food related segment if possible, since it IS the Dinner Party download. Keep up the great work - and if you’re ever in Texas, come to one of my dinner parties….they are superfun and I know you guys would be in your element. Off to experiment with sushirrito recipes! Sayonara, amigos!
