Episode 86: Gabrielle Hamilton, The Peacemaker, and Smokeavores
This week: Celebrated author and chef Gabrielle Hamilton shares a sweet secret… the Peacemaker breaks the peace… and a hipster crop lights up Brooklyn. Plus, rise and shine with a new tune from Manchester, UK’s Star Slinger.
A History Lesson with Booze: The Peacemaker and “The Bloodyberry Fizz” This week back in 1844, the Navy’s first propeller-powered steam ship, the USS Princeton, set sail on a pleasure cruise. On board were U.S. President John Tyler, most of his cabinet, and “The Peacemaker” — a 27,000 lb. gun that definitely did not live up to its name. Hear about the havoc it wreaked that day… then commemorate the carnage in typical American fashion: with a drink.
In a shaker combine:
- 1.5 oz raspberry-infused vodka
- 2 oz. fresh pomegranate juice
- 1 oz. fresh blood orange juice
- juice from a 1/4 wedge of lime
- 1 egg white
- 1 tsp. powdered sugar
Shake vigorously for about 30 seconds. Add ice, shake vigorously for another 30 seconds until egg white has formed a merengue. Strain into coup glass and fleck with pomegranate molasses “blood” from an eyedropper. Serve during pomegranate season, Halloween, or when entertaining goths.
Guest of Honor: Gabrielle Hamilton Celebrated chef Gabrielle Hamilton gets raves for the food at her East Village restaurant, Prune. Now she’s getting the same for her memoir, “Blood, Bones and Butter,” which traces her life from idyllic childhood to shattered family to culinary salvation. She tells Brendan about her aversion to fame, her lifetime of dishwashing, and the truth about sweetbreads.
One For The Road: Star Slinger - “Mornin’” Darren Williams — aka Star Slinger — makes beautiful beats at home in Manchester, UK, and music blogs worldwide love him for it. His latest tune, “Mornin’,” is the kind of mellow-vibed, sample-happy confection that helped ’90s ravers wake up after a night of clubbing. Best listened to when you’re ready for breakfast.
