Have you tried "volunteer computing"?

You're probably heard of "crowdsourcing," having many individuals each do part of a larger project. (The Public Insight Network is a crowdsourcing project, for example.) Other projects share the work with thousands, too - thousands of computers. "Volunteer computing" projects use idle computers to process scientific data, which helps speed along research on climate change and medicine.

NHPR's show Word of Mouth is interested in learning about volunteer computing, and you can help. Have you shared your computer's processing power with a volunteer project? How was your experience? Share what you know below.
