Between the Polarized Extremes of Abortion

The topic of abortion has come to be framed in U.S. political and religious life by two positions — "pro-life" and "pro-choice" — that leave little room for reconciliation. Yet across our political and cultural divisions, most Americans fall somewhere between these absolute poles — with poll after poll revealing a majority opinion that abortion should remain legal but with some limits.

There are "pro-life Democrats" and "pro-choice Republicans." And as we've been hearing in our interviews and research this election year, there is within both parties a growing impulse to move beyond entrenched positions that make common reflection — or even civility in disagreement — impossible.

Help us explore and round out news coverage about this delicate issue in a safe environment. We want to reframe how you and others might engage in this dialogue in ways not yet imagined.
